AI &amp; Music powered by S+T+ARTS is a programme of performances, talks, masterclasses and workshops showcasing artistic projects, creative proposals and research centered on the links between machine learning and musical creation.Over the next three years, Sónar will dedicate a central part of its programming to exploring innovations in this rapidly evolving sector, building on the blueprint from past editions of Ars Electronica and SónarCCCB, and creating a lasting snapshot of how AI is unlocking musical creativity across the arts, the music industry and beyond.

A trailblazing performer with a unique vision comes to Sónar by Day

AI &amp; Music powered by S+T+ARTS&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8">British producer Lee Gamble wrote his latest album&nbsp;Models&nbsp;using AI-generated synthetic voices that sing in an almost wordless language. To bring it to life, he’s collaborating with Spanish choreographer/action artist Candela Capitán, for a special performance featuring lighting design by Jacqueline Sobiszewski, and co-produced by Sónar and Krakow’s Unsound festival.&nbsp;Models&nbsp;uses the idea of learning, mimicry and the sharing of physical signals and information to inform the narrative and overall movement, and Candela's choreography explores the dynamics of embodiment, mimicry and mechanisation. Instead of automating human creativity, how could AI-powered media make it easier to play the machine as an instrument - to dance with the machine? How can we get our bodies back in AI?&nbsp; &nbsp;This year, Sónar+D is offering you the chance to participate in an AI Performance Playground Hacklab, exploring how AI and technology can enhance artistic creativity. Led by renowned technologist, artist and writer Peter Kirn and multidisciplinary artistry and musician Cibelle Cavalli Bastos, it offers you an opportunity to work side-by-side with artists from various disciplines, using machine learning as a tool for creative discovery.&nbsp;This ‘Performance Playground’ will be a space for artists from a range of disciplines - code, electronic music production, instrumental performance and singing, dance, puppetry, or whatever else you feel like bringing. Over two days of workshops at Sónar+D on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th June, the selected participants will explore the creation and customisation of local data sets, while also building collaborative performance tools. On Saturday 15th June, the Hacklab will conclude with a final collaborative performance onstage at Sónar+D. &nbsp;The Open Call for participation is <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfKt4NoDX_AkQbE2_D-d7ZHGhKIxKQJzyGcqQWsoOVSulh_Cw/viewform">now open</a>, with applications accepted from anyone with an interest in the intersection between art, music, performance and technology. AI &amp; Music powered by S+T+ARTS&nbsp;&nbsp;Montréal based digital artist and performer Myriam Bleau teams up with dancer, choreographer and lighting designer Nien-Tzu Weng for a brand new performance. Inspired by both artists’ fascination with the spaces between physical reality and virtual, imagined worlds, ‘Second Self’, explores the multiple possibilities of the touchscreen: as an extension of ourselves, an instrument, a mirror, and a portal to the virtual world.&nbsp;&nbsp;The performance will be preceded by an exclusive AV talk by Myriam Bleau, where she’ll explain how she approaches technology as another agent in the creation process, and&nbsp; how she’s integrating AI into her practice.&nbsp;

AI &amp; Music powered by S+T+ARTS&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8">Since Sónar hosted the S+T+ARTS AI and Music Festival in 2021, Artificial Intelligence has moved from being a subject debated on panels to a widely used tool for music production. In this open forum, a panel of musicians, researchers, artists and academics will explain how they’re making use of AI in their work, with participation and interaction encouraged from the audience. The forum will be moderated by Dazed Features Editor Gunseli Yalcinkaya, whose writing explores technology and internet culture, with a particular focus on the modern myths and ideologies embedded in these systems.&nbsp;Anna Xambó is an experimental electronic music producer and researcher. She’s currently a Senior Lecturer in Sound and Music Computing at the Centre for Digital Music (C4DM), School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science,&nbsp;Queen Mary University of London.&nbsp;&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8">Magda Polo leads the&nbsp;EKHO research group&nbsp;at the&nbsp;University of Barcelona, an interdisciplinary team focused on soundscapes. Following the presentation of ‘The Right Way’, an AI-created soundscape of the rapper Leïti Sene, at Sónar 2023, she’s working on a new project focused on Yoko Ono.&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8">Rob Clouth is a multidisciplinary artist who explores electronic music, computational audio and new media. With 20 years of experience creating DAWs, he’s recently switched to live performance, creating loopless live electronic music and visuals using algorithms. He’s also pioneered an AI-assisted technique he’s named ‘cheatboxing’ that enables him to transform his voice into any other sound in real time.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8">Sergi Jordà is a Catalan innovator, computer scientist, music technology and AI researcher, currently working in the&nbsp;Music Technology Group (MTG) at the&nbsp;Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Part of the team that created the Reactable instrument (as used by Björk), he’s now exploring the application and implications of artificial intelligence in music, as well as studying the effects of music on sleep.&nbsp;&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8">Thor Magnusson is a musician, software developer, researcher and professor.&nbsp;He’s also the leader of the&nbsp;Intelligent Instruments Lab, an European funded research team that’s investigating the role of AI in new musical instruments and exploring the applications of these developments in music and beyond.

We are the music makers… AI & Music

AI &amp; Music powered by S+T+ARTS&nbsp;&nbsp;Originally from Galicia, but now based in Valencia, where she teaches at the Berklee College of Music, Marte Verde is a&nbsp; visual artist, creative technologist and educator. Her work explores the unpredictable relationship between the organic and the electronic, and how this can be visualised. Noise, randomness and repetition are all key elements of her practice, as is real-time digital manipulation of analog signals. Inspired by DIY and maker philosophy, she’s an avid collaborator, having worked with artists ranging from composer José Venditti, Galician producers BFlecha and Yugen Kala, and German electronic musicians Anthony Rother and Christoph de Babalon. For Sónar+D 2024, she’ll draw on her teaching experience to explain how she’s finding innovative ways to use AI technology.
