ASIANDOPEBOYS is the title given to the artistic practice of Tianzhuo Chen, whose multidisciplinary performances, installations, music videos, photography and artworks, blur the boundaries between exhibition and theatre. Cultural symbols, as diverse as 90’s clip art, skateboard graphics, chairman mao, butoh theater, or tibetan Idols are all fair-game for co-option and recontextualisation, ready-mades to be placed in service of his unique and diverse global version. Ben Böhmer’s music sounds like it could move mountains and part seas. The German producer’s brand of melodic electronica drips with emotion; his breakthrough album ‘Being Again’ was written when he found himself separated from his fiancé due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Three years on, and he’s one of the fastest rising producers in the world, freshly signed to Ninja Tune. He comes to Sónar 2024 at the height of his powers with a powerful, vulnerable live set that moves from swooning instrumentals to richly detailed club music.

A singular and enigmatic presence on the UK rap and grime scene for over a decade, his sporadic releases and features alongside rap luminaries such as Skepta or Giggs offered all too fleeting glimpses into the man behind the mask. For his first full length LP, Famous Last Words, CAS takes us further into the fantasy, with a sci-fi epic set in the DEADCORP universe with production by Johnny Jewel and Stranger Things’ Kyle Ritter. This 80’s synth drenched backdrop, best exemplified on the unexpected TikTok hit Pat Earrings, serves as the perfect backdrop to his hard hitting tales of sex, drugs and violence on the rain soaked streets and motorways of his native London.&nbsp;

Belgium’s second most famous export after frites shows no sign of slowing down on her march to techno world domination. Building on the rich legacy of Belgian rave heritage, and beloved by audiences across the globe, Charlotte de Witte’s festival and club sets, as well as her stewardship of the KNTXT label, have created a new standard for dancefloor melting, hard-edged, trancey techno. She comes to Sónar 2024 to present her new concept show, intriguingly titled ‘Overdrive’.

Throughout his career as a DJ and producer, Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points has shown himself fascinated by the emotional potential of even the most seemingly out there and abstract sounds. An active digger and sonic explorer, his b2b sessions with Dan Snaith (Caribou) and Keiran Hebden (Four Tet) at Plastic People are the stuff of London club legend, while his recent LP with the late, great Pharoah Sanders and the London Contemporary Orchestra, placed him on numerous end of year lists. For this live set at Sónar by Night, he’ll be once again pushing at the outer limits of club music, building on the modular synth work outs of recent single <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://floatingpoints.bandcamp.com/album/birth4000">Birth 4000</a>.

The shining star of French house and disco

One of 2023’s breakout artists, DJ Gigola comes to Sónar 2024 riding on a high. Both solo and as part of the multifaceted <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.livefromearth.de/">Live From Earth</a> collective, the Berlin native has been reconfiguring dancefloors since 2016. Using rhythm and groove as a guide, her hybrid sets take in everything from Surgeon to Madonna. She seamlessly blends high-intensity 90s cuts - trance, hardcore, techno and acid - with new school rave, club tracks, and dashes of pop music. Her experiments aren’t confined to the club either: inspired by her yoga and meditation practice, she’s released an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://livefromearthklub.bandcamp.com/album/fluid-meditations">album of guided meditations</a> featuring ASMR vocals, field recordings and goa-style tabla drums. At Sónar by Day, she’ll be strictly focused on the dancefloor: expect a genre-fluid workout from this rising star.

What do you get if you cross Hector Oaks, a stalwart of the European techno underground, and Partiboi69, the Australian rave maestro (with a mean line in New Balance sneakers)? The answer is 2 solid hours of laser focused machine funk and hi-nrg techno, endlessly ratcheting bpms and pyrotechnics both technical and (possibly) literal. Not much of a punchline, granted, but a good time, guaranteed.&nbsp;

Don’t bother locking the stable door&nbsp; - Eurodance sensation horsegiirL has made a dash for the mainstream. A much loved fixture on the Berlin club scene, this flag bearer for feel-good arpeggios, happy hardcore breakdowns and tales of forbidden interspecies love is set to turn the green grass of Sónar Village into a paddock-rave for all her VIP’s (Very Important Pony’s). Neigh-sayers be dammed.&nbsp;

Unbridled Pleasure

A singular voice and an undeniable talent, Jessie Ware brings the glamour of Studio 54, and the energy of 80’s ibiza to Sónar this year, for, inexplicably, her first time at the festival. Over the last decade, Ware has grown in profile, from a much loved vocalist on the UKG and bass music scene to a multi-award nominated pop star, opening for Harry Styles and namechecked by none other than Barack Obama, as one of his favourite songwriters. Her new LP That! Feels Good! is a maximalist disco epic, whose influences span time and space - from the 70’s funk of Salsoul records or Arthur Baker productions, the unapologetic 80’s joy of Wham or Grace Jones, through to contemporary icons Kylie and Roisin Murphy - both of whom guest on the album. Armed with an album of dancefloor-destroying bangers and a back catalogue stacked with certified hits, her long overdue performance at Sónar is set to be one for the history books.

Since bursting onto the scene with a ubiquitous Janet Jackson remix, the universally acclaimed 99% LP, and a triumphant Sónar by Night performance in 2017, the Montreal raised producer Kaytranada has emerged as a modern master of the woozy, sample based funk pioneered by J-Dilla and Madlib. Despite the Grammy wins (2 and counting) and production credits for a who’s who of pop royalty, Kaytranada continues to keep an ear to the underground, with his most recent joint LP with rapper Aminé coming over as the perfect blend of beats and rhymes.&nbsp;

La neerlandesa combina trance, acid y techno en un sonido rápido, onírico y eufórico. Un sonido que, ahora, ejecuta también como cosecha propia con su primer proyecto live, cuya única fecha en España este año será en Sónar. A caballo entre el trance, el eurodance y el hard house, DJ Daddy Trance nunca decepciona. Estamos ante una apuesta firme y contrastada por los himnos de épocas doradas. It feels strange to describe The Martinez Brothers as house music legends. It seems like only yesterday when the brothers from The Bronx were upstart DJs of 16 and 18, too young to even get into the clubs they were being booked to play. Raised on a diet of salsa, latin jazz, soul, and disco by their father (they were musicians before they were DJs), they’re now legitimately one of the biggest names in house music. Residents since 2011 at Ibiza’s DC10, co-owners of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://soundcloud.com/tuskegeerecords">Tuskegee records</a> with Seth Troxler, collaborations with Louie Vega, Nile Rodgers, and Tokischa … the list goes on. In 2024, they return to Sónar for the first time since 20178: their blend of latin-tinted New York house and bumping tech house is sure to go down a treat.

A&nbsp; transdisciplinary artist and researcher from Santiago, Chile, Nicole L’Huillier explores sound and vibrations as a way to explore agency, identity, collectivity and imagination. Playfulness and DIY are recurring themes in her work, which includes installations, sonic and vibrational sculptures, custom-made listening and sounding devices, performances, experimental compositions, poetry and writing.&nbsp; She holds a Ph.D. in Media Arts &amp; Sciences from MIT, and has been exhibited at venues including the Venice Architecture Biennale, Kunsthalle Baden Baden, and the Museo de Arte. For Sónar+D 2024, she’ll deliver a Masterclass that explores how she’s integrating AI in unique ways into her practice.

Reinier Zonneveld está marcando una época. Tipo llamativo, se mire por donde se mire, el productor y performer neerlandés ha dejado muy claro que no atiende a ningún tipo de canon. Si alguien tenía que lograr el récord del live set más largo de la historia (11 horas y 11 minutos), tenía que ser él, un tío con camisas coloridas, cochazos por doquier y pasión desmedida por el champán. Por supuesto, registró el récord en su propio festival, Karren Maar, marca cuyo éxito camino de su mano, al igual que lo hace su sello Filth On Acid. Reinier Zonneveld es puro desgaste: techno ácido, estridente y ultraacelerado, drops secos y violentos y una energía desmedida que contagia a cualquiera con ganas de vaciarse en la pista. Convertido ya en residente de los grandes eventos a nivel europeo, Reinier Zonneveld apunta a convertirse en uno de esos amigos fieles de Sónar. De momento, está será su segunda visita al festival. Quien se perdiera la primera, ya no tiene excusa.

Born in South Sudan, raised in Australia, and now based in France, Skin On Skin has found a natural way to blend club-ready house and techno with underground and alternative hip hop, from Memphis rap to drill. A skilled producer with an ear for an irresistible vocal hook, his style harks back to house’s raw, rugged beginnings: low slung, bass-driven and punchy. He comes to Sónar 2024 with a reputation for hard-charging, bumping DJ sets, which he peppers with his own unreleased tracks and unique edits. Don’t miss this one.

Skin on Skin

Detroit meets Manchester behind the decks at Sónar 2024, as two female pioneers go back-to-back. Stacey Hotwaxxx Hale is one of Detroit’s unsung heroines, the first female house music DJ and producer from the Motor City; whose radio shows in the late 80s helped bring house music culture to the masses. She’s joined by Manchester’s DJ Paulette, one of two female resident DJs at the legendary Hacienda during the golden era of acid house. Each has spent over three decades in the game, and their thirst for new music and discovery has never faded. Expect rare grooves, uplifting house, jacking techno, and deep cuts from this sensational pair of selectors.&nbsp;

Berlin-based Argentine artist Tomás Saraceno is known for thinking big while paying attention to the smallest details. An architect by training, he’s created large-scale installations and exhibited at museums around the world from The Serpentine Gallery to Palais de Tokyo and MoMA, and many will recognise his work with spider webs (via his Arachnophilia collective) and aerosolar sculptures (via his open source Aerocene initiative). His practice blurs the lines between scientific and artistic investigation, engages in dialogue with the natural world, and seeks to challenge dominant hierarchies of thought and knowledge. At Sónar+D 2024, he’ll deliver an audiovisual conference explaining his work and holistic ecological philosophy.

Hip-hop iconoclast and anti-cultural icon TOMMY CASH returns to Sónar in 2024 with a brand new live show. Via self-directed videos, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cxk7V9KMZgo/">impromptu interventions</a>, and even <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://tommycashshop.com/">collaborations with fashion brands</a>, the Estonian rapper has projected his own surreal worldview across digital media. He’s also a hyper-talented rapper, possessed of a unique, charismatic flow; and has an ear for unconventional beats, from trap and experimental electronica to hyperpop. Live he’s a blur of energy, his absurd digital creations acting as the backdrop for his physical stage presence and electric charisma. The TOMMY CASH roadshow is coming to town again; you won’t want to miss it.

A 30 year old rapper might feel caught between the genre’s past and future, but not Vince Staples. The Californian artist (he was born and raised in Ramona Park, a neighbourhood in Long Beach which lends its name to his <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7M5f2vF4PVw&amp;list=PLB78WuWJ2OCHApavT3X7C8sPXeVLePCgo&amp;pp=iAQB">latest album</a>) is equal parts innovator and genre custodian; a dextrous lyricist who’s unafraid to push the musical envelope. With the help of producers like Kenny Beats and Mustard, he’s updated the blueprint of West Coast rap for the 21st century. Possessed of a remarkable emotional honesty, he tackles themes that range from personal strife and romance to past trauma and societal ills with effortless eloquence. On stage he’s a charismatic and magnetic presence: it’s a pleasure to have one of hip hop’s truly great live performers back at Sónar in 2024.

Today we announce the Sónar+D 2024 Open Call, offering you the chance to showcase your work at Sónar 2024 on the 13th, 14th and 15th of June next year. We want you to join the biggest celebration of creative talent in Barcelona, and help us continue to position the city as a global hub for creativity, research, and technology.&nbsp;&nbsp;If you’re an artist, designer, or researcher; or if you’re part of a studio, collective, or other organisation working with creativity, research and technology; you could have your work exhibited in our Project Area next summer. Organised every year since 2013, it’s an ‘anti-disciplinary’ event that explores how creativity changes the present and imagines new futures, with a focus on technology and innovation. It’s where you’ll find Sónar’s most experimental and forward-thinking programming, a carefully curated mix of talks, exhibits, forums and masterclasses, plus groundbreaking performances that go beyond music. Geared towards curious minds as well as leading experts and specialists, it draws a mix of artists, designers, thinkers, creatives, scientists and entrepreneurs to Barcelona every year, serving as a venue where these communities can explore their shared interests and get to know each other.&nbsp;Since 2022, Sónar+D has been open to the general public at Sónar by Day, who can visit the majority of activities and areas, including the Project Area and all performances at Stage+D and Complex+D. A selection of activities and areas, including the Thursday and Friday morning programme as launched in 2023, remain exclusively available to SonarPass+D and Sónar by Day Pass ticket holders.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What kind of projects will be considered?&nbsp;Submissions will be accepted from projects under the following headings:&nbsp;<ul><li class="li3">Music &amp; Sound*</li><li class="li3">AI and Music*</li><li class="li3">Avatars, Digital Beings and the metaverse</li><li class="li3">Experimental and artistic gaming</li><li class="li3">Realities+D - Alternative Realities (AR, VR and XR)</li><li class="li3">AI and Film</li><li class="li3">Blockchain experiments</li></ul>&nbsp;*Please note that we will not be accepting any applications for DJ sets or any kind of musical performances, any applications that include such proposals will be immediately deleted on reception.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Why present my project at Sónar+D?&nbsp;Sónar+D offers you the opportunity to present your project, product or idea to a wide, transversal and international audience. You’ll be exhibiting to an audience of thousands of people, ranging from the general public to journalists and potential clients.&nbsp;&nbsp;You’ll also be part of a community of other participants and exhibitors, which will help you build contacts, get valuable feedback, and inspire yourself with other projects and products.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where will my project be exhibited at Sónar+D?&nbsp;Your project will be exhibited within the Sónar+D Project Area, which was introduced at Sónar+D 2023. Part forum, and part multi-faceted exhibition area, Project Area connects Sónar+D with the rest of the festival, featuring a variety of booths and stands where projects, products and ideas (both final and under development) are showcased by their creators: designers, artists, businesses, start-ups, research institutions, and other organisations.&nbsp;&nbsp;Project Area is open to the general public at Sónar by Day from 3pm each day, and exclusively to Sónar+D ticket-holders on Thursday and Friday morning, meaning your work will be exhibited to an audience that includes the general public as well as experts and specialists. You’ll even be able to set up your own interactive workshop in the Project Area if you’re interested in doing so.&nbsp;&nbsp;What will Sónar+D offer me for my participation?&nbsp;&nbsp;We’ll help you exhibit your project at Sónar+D 2024, where you’ll be part of a dynamic community of exhibitors from around the world and where your work will be on display to over 25,000 Sónar by Day attendees.&nbsp;&nbsp;We’ll provide you with a physical space to exhibit in the Project Area and cover all exhibition costs (electricity consumption, on-site assistance from Sónar+D staff, cleaning), plus a set of guidelines for setting up and dismantling your exhibit. Please note that expenses associated with the production, promotion, development, or implementation of any project will not be covered.&nbsp;In addition, we’ll also offer you:&nbsp;· Besides your 3 exhibitor passes, we’ll offer you 5 x SonarPass+D for each selected project, providing access to all Sónar+D activities and all of&nbsp; Sónar by Day and Sónar by Night.&nbsp;· Access to the exclusive Sónar+D morning programme of masterclasses, panels and community meet-ups on Thursday and Friday morning. After celebrating 30 years in 2023, Sónar enters into its fourth decade, with&nbsp;tickets now on sale for Sónar 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;Dates are already confirmed for the&nbsp;13th, 14th and 15th of June next year, at our traditional homes of&nbsp;Fira Montjuïc (Sónar by Day and&nbsp;Sónar+D) and&nbsp;Fira Gran Via&nbsp;(Sónar by Night).&nbsp;You can now purchase your&nbsp;SonarPass or&nbsp;SonarPass+D (both also available as VIP tickets) directly via our&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://sonar.es/en/tickets">tickets page</a>, with a limited quantity on sale at first release price.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sónar around the world&nbsp;First release tickets are also available for the&nbsp;3rd edition of Sónar Lisboa, which will take place in the Portuguese capital on the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th March 2024.
