How we got here…
In November last year, we announced 66 names for one of the biggest first lineup announcements in Sónar history. It featured dance music legends like Plastikman, Latin pop superstar Nathy Peluso, two of the UK’s biggest electronic acts in BICEP and Overmono, still under-development shows by Arca and Eric Prydz, plus Armin van Buuren b2b Indira Paganotto and Blawan b2b Skrillex (and that’s without mentioning Peggy Gou, Honey Dijon, Four Tet, Mochakk, Vintage Culture, Andres Campo, and plenty more…).
Since then we’ve unveiled a brand-new collaboration with one of dance music’s most recognisable brands - Boiler Room will debut at Sónar by Night in June - and announced that we’ll be re-upping SonarLab x Printworks following a successful first year in 2024.
So what’s next?
…and where we’re going
Or maybe better, who’s next? Those two words have been integral to every Sónar lineup for the past three decades. The 51 new artists added today include plenty who are poised to take the next step.
Headlining are two artists - one international, and one local - who have created their own artistic languages from diverse influences. We’re bringing Pa Salieu to Sónar by Night on Friday, with the British-Gambian rapper on the edge of stardom following the release of Afrikan Alien, which blends drill and rap with influences from afrobeat to amapiano. And over at Sónar by Day on Saturday, we’ve got the freshest voice in Spanish music, Mushka. Bad Gyal’s younger sister has her own unique sound: drawing from trap, reggaeton, Jersey club and dance music culture.
Also appearing at Sónar by Day is Galician-Brazilian artist Lua de Santana, whose complex yet club-ready songs explore identity and sexuality, while 21st-century pop disruptor Sega Bodega heads to Sónar by Night for the first time.
We’ve hosted Luis Garbán at Sónar many times as Cardopusher; this year he debuts as Safety Trance - his crossover industrial-reggaetón project - with a hybrid live/DJ AV set. Joining him at Sónar by Day is youthful Catalan popstar Ouineta, who mixes Y2K nostalgia with hyper-accelerationist futurism.
Switching to Sónar by Night, it’s hard to think of an artist on a hotter streak than Bogotá-based Venezuelan producer WOST right now: you’ll want to say you were there for his Sónar debut. A couple of years have passed since nusar3000 first appeared at Sónar; now with collaborations with Nathy Peluso and Mushka under his belt, the masked producer returns for a hotly anticipated live set.
The dancefloor doesn’t stand still, so neither do we
If there’s one thing we’ve learnt after 32 editions, it’s that the dancefloor never stands still. That’s why every year, we look for artists and acts who challenge expectations from the DJ booth. Nathy Peluso headlines Sónar by Night on Saturday, but on the same night she’ll also make a special appearance in support of Club Grasa, the EP of club remixes that accompanied Grasa. We’ll reveal more details very soon.
Also announced today for Sónar by Night are a pair of special back-to-back sets. Brooklyn artist Dee Diggs is a modern house icon in the making; she pairs up with ‘90s diva Ultra Naté, who you’ll recognise as the voice behind all-time anthem ‘Free’. And yes, we’re giving them a microphone. Elsewhere, two of club music’s most enigmatic figures, Skee Mask and Actress, swap tracks in a rare joint session; Anderson Do Paraíso strips baile funk down to the bare bones; and DJ SOSA RD’s ferocious, frenetic sets are full of unexpected twists and turns, tracing lines between the Caribbean, Africa and Europe. Also taking to the booth is Barcelona’s foremost exponent of Latinx club culture, Tiyumii, and UK-Barcelona transplant and global bass enthusiast EYRA.
We’ve long admired free-spirited Italian selector Paquita Gordon, whose sets travel genres, styles and moods, so we’re thrilled to co-curate her appearance at Sónar with Terraforma as part of the TIMES collaborative project (we’re also co-curating Catalan violinist Asia, announced back in November, together with the Italian festival). And together with Insomnia, we’re bringing another pair of DJs to Sónar by Day: Norwegian artist Niilas, whose glittering DJ sets evoke arctic soundscapes and his Sámi heritage, as well as previously-announced Egyptian DJ ABADIR. And another musical freedom fighter, Finnish-French artist Emma dj, also appears with an indescribable mix of experimental electronics, trap and club music. And don’t forget, in November we’d already announced the likes of Juliana Huxtable, KEBRA and dj g2g.
Performances from unique perspectives at Sónar by Day
We want you to hear things you won’t find anywhere else at Sónar, which is why we look for artists with one-of-a-kind visions. Alva Noto and Fennesz continue the legacy of their mutual friend and collaborator, the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, with ‘Continuum’, bridging the gap between different generations of experimental electronic composers. Plus one of the most inimitable producers in electronic music, Matthew Herbert, pairs up with drummer and vocalist Momoko Gill as Herbert & Momoko.
These incredible collaborations are added to Actress & Suzanne Ciani’s ‘Concrète Waves’, co-commissioned with the Barbican, as well as a pair of already-announced AV shows co-curated with Semibreve as part of the TIMES project: Grand River and Abul Mogard’s ambient opera ‘In uno spazio immenso’, and Shapednoise & Sevi Iko Dømochevsky’s mangled mix of CGI, hip-hop and noise, 'Absurd Matter: Continuum'.
Also added to Sónar by Day are a trio of local artists who’ve crafted their own sonic worlds. Modern pop visionary and superproducer Alizzz steps into the spotlight to perform tracks from his second album ‘Conducción Temeraría’; he appears alongside Mallorcan ‘pop-synth’ artist Sofia and a brand-new theatrical show - entitled ‘FDM’ - by experimental pop artist Nina Emocional. They join a diverse set of Spanish artists already announced for Sónar by Day: from Tarta Relena and Yerai Cortés to Samantha Hudson and Raül Refree & Niño de Elche.
We’ve also looked for new voices in experimental music, with multi-talented Mexican electroacoustic experimentalist and visual artist Vica Pacheco; 19-year old DIY pop producer, singer and Nathy Peluso collaborator TRISTÁN!, who’ll be joined by his group The Jazz Band Air; and a special commission between visual artists Akyute and post-colonial astrologist writer Alice Sparkly Kat. They joined already announced performances from the likes of Dania + Mau Morgó, Sara Persico & Mika Oki, and Lord Spikeheart.
Activist research institute Forensic Architecture are familiar faces at Sónar. Their sister agency Forensis has collaborated with Bill Kouligas, founder of experimental label PAN, for ‘The Drum & The Bird’, a multi-sensory performance based on the impact of German colonialism in Namibia. This show has been co-comissioned by Berlin Atonal, Sónar, Rewire, and Terraforma. And together with Taller de Músics, Sónar has united jazz-flamenco pianist Chano Domínguez and producer Bronquio for ‘Calle Barcelona’, a project inspired by legendary flamenco artist Paco de Lucía.
In November we added the first two performances to emerge from the TIMES collaborative project, ‘A Forbidden Distance’ by Saint Abdullah, Eomac & Rebecca Salvadori and ‘Białowieża’ by Chris Watson & Izabela Dłużya.
‘The Talk’ is the second original work to emerge from the initiative, and is co-commissioned by Nuits sonores, Reworks, Sónar, and Terraforma. Developed by musicians HEITH and James K together with artist-researcher Günseli Yalcinkaya and set designer Andrea Belosi, it’s a multidisciplinary performance presented as a surreal talk show, inspired by the world’s first computer, the Ancient Greek Antikythera.
Music powered by Artificial Intelligence…
Speaking of computers, the AI & Music programme - powered by S+T+ARTS - returns to Sónar by Day and Sónar+D in 2025. Added to the programme today is a brand-new AV show by UK artist patten and ‘Hyporeal’, the first large-scale solo work by Ville Haimala, best known as one half of radical audiovisual duo Amnesia Scanner. R-010 and Venerandi’s collaborative show explores the human voice using neural network technology, joining the already announced Maria Arnal, whose brand-new show ‘Ama’ uses a digital choir generated from vocals recorded from an installation as part of exhibition at Barcelona’s CCCB.
… that jumps off the stage
Other shows take electronic music out of the speakers and away from screens. Rotterdam rave provocateurs Animistic Beliefs have teamed up with new media artist Jeisson Drenth to create Thức Tỉnh, a multi-disciplinary performance that merges ancestral narrative with modernism. Barcelona-based visual artists YESSi PERSE draws heavily from science-fiction and fantasy; they’ve united with contemporary Catalan dance group laSADCUM to create ‘CYBERMEDIEVAL’, a dystopian performance piece which skewers tech companies, Big Data, and techno-feudalism. Both shows continue a theme from the first announcement, which featured Rone x (LA)HORDE ambitious project with the Ballet National de Marseille, ‘Room With A View’, and theatrical French duo Polo & Pan.
Also added today are a trio of high-energy electronic live acts, joining already announced live sets by Max Cooper, Daito Manabe, Cora Novoa and Blawan. Josh Caffé is dedicated to reminding audiences of house music’s black, queer roots: the charismatic British artist appears live with a full band at Sónar by Day, hot off the release of an acclaimed album. At Sónar by Night, masked Peruvian duo Dengue Dengue Dengue fuse the Andean rhythms of cumbia with electronic music, while local lynchpins Phran and Ylia team up as People You May Know for a hardware-powered live AV set that mixes nocturnal electro, infectious breakbeat, and punky textures.
Your favourite DJ’s favourite DJs
It simply wouldn’t be Sónar without a list of DJs you won’t find together anywhere else. As well as already announced heavy-hitters like Honey Dijon, Four Tet, Peggy Gou, Mochakk, Vintage Culture and Sama’ Abdulhadi, we’ve added another stack of selectors today.
From the Sónar by Night lineup, Innervisions don Dixon might be the most recognisable name, but you’ll also find the likes of veteran Midwest rave icon Hiroko Yamamura and a not-to-be-overlooked back-to-back between Saoirse and Ryan Elliott. We’ve also thrown in genre specialists from around the world: dubstep revivalist SICARIA meets Mexican deep techno artist Andy Martin and the psychedelic, percussive stylings of Catalonia’s oma totem. Plus already announced sets from next-generation junglist Tim Reaper and speed garage aficionado Interplanetary Criminal.
Looking for explosive, high-energy, modern club music? Barcelona artist NAGUIYAMI and Argentinian dirtilarita’s sweat-drenched selections pull from dancefloors around the globe, and Venezuela meets Andalusia when Deperreo’s L’Miranda and Candadismo go back-to-back: expect everything from flamenco to bass music, delivered with a deliciously absurd touch. They join a list of high-voltage DJ sets at Sónar by Night that also includes Flore b2b Peder Mannerfelt and DJ Paca.
Over at Sónar by Day, two of Chicago house’s most respected (and probably overlooked) DJs, Alinka and Shaun J. Wright, go back-to-back. Resident at famed Barcelona queer event Latineo, AMANTRA’s punishing, varied sets have made her a fixture on the European underground circuit, while Berlin resident Hello Sasy is equal parts melodic, hard, fast, and euphoric. From Barcelona, Nahoomie is making a name for herself with sets heavy on 90s house and garage, while over in Madrid, Colombian DJ Maria Latina has built a reputation as a killer selector, weaving together house, breakbeat, UK garage, and countless other styles. They’re added to a lineup that already featured Fafi Abdel Nour b2b Jennifer Loveless, DjSport, Shannen SP, and plenty more.
The biggest Sónar Week ever
The 51 acts added today and the 66 acts announced back in November are just one part of the biggest week in electronic music: Sónar Week 2025. Over 6 days in June, Barcelona becomes the epicentre for electronic and dance music culture, as well as digital creativity. From AI-generated film festival +RAIN (jointly organised by Sónar+D and Universitat Pompeu Fabra) to the open-air OFFSónar parties at Poble Espanyol, this is the only place in the world that you’ll find sold out shows by RÜFÜS DU SOL and &ME and Adam Port (⅔ of Keinemusik) alongside an official Sónar opening concert of works by Steve Reich and Raquel García-Tomás at Palau de la Música Catalana. And stay tuned, because there’s more still to be announced…
And more still to come from Sónar+D
At the start of the year, we teased the themes for this year’s edition of Sónar+D: AI + Creativity, Futuring the creative industries, and Worlds to come. We’re putting the final touches to the full programme for 2025, which we’ll announce very soon. So make sure you keep an eye on the brand-new micro-site for ‘the only conference with a festival included’ this spring.
