Why’s it interesting?

If anyone’s got the recipe for making truly interesting, unique AI music, it’s Bangkok artist and researcher Lamtharn (Hanoi) Hantrakul, better known as  ญาบอยฮานอย / yaboihanoi.

In 2022 he won the AI Song Contest with his track อสุระเทวะชุมนุม Enter Demons and Gods. Before that, he won several prizes for his ‘modular fiddle’ fidular, an instrument that demonstrated his cross-cultural approach to design and engineering. He also helped invent machine-learning models for Google, TikTok and Bytdance: his SEED-MUSIC engine is now deployed as part of Doubao, the Chinese equivalent of ChatGPT.

But as with any recipe, the ingredient list only tells you so much. At Sónar+D, we’ve invited him to tell us how he’s used AI as a tool to challenge dominant cultural trends, and create modern electronic music that is true to cultural traditions
