The architect turned digital artist takes us on a tour through the auntieverse

Beyond the Screen

Today, the fear that AI will erase artists from the face of the earth is widespread. At the risk of sounding like techno-optimists (we’re not, and neither are we techno-pessimists), the counter-argument is that some AI has opened up new possibilities for artists, and even, as is the case with niceaunties, created new artists

A former architect, the Singaporean digital artist has used AI to help her build the ‘auntieverse’  has built, a speculative universe which places the Asian figure of the ‘auntie’ at the centre of everyday life, exploring food, beauty, care and the environment. With clear influences from surrealism, fantasy and kawaii culture, her work explores these forgotten ‘aunties’ - aunts, neighbours, women of a certain age - who have been erased from digital culture.

Her true talent is combining mass appeal with a gently radical message. Her work has taken her to museums around the world, caught the attention of Forbes and The Guardian, and been projected at Shibuya Crossing and Sunset Boulevard. And of course, there’s her viral TED Talk from 2025. We’re thrilled to have her at Sónar+D, a reminder that in the end, AI is what you make with it.
