Vince Staples might just be rap’s most underrated genius. While Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s very public - and very unnecessary - beef continues to dominate headlines, the Californian rapper has released Dark Times, thirteen tracks that explore heartbreak, adulthood, vulnerability and nostalgia with his typical lyrical sharpness. From the retro gospel of ‘Black&Blue’ to the wearied, lo-fi house of ‘Little Homies’, his ear for a beat is still as sharp as ever too.
He also revealed that the album will be his final release on Def Jam, a full circle moment that sees him return to the legendary label where he released his breakthrough albums Summertime ‘06 and Big Fish Theory.
Famed for his electric live shows and magnetic stage presence, make sure you don’t miss Vince Staples at Sónar by Night on Saturday 15th June. It’ll be one of only nine dates in Europe this summer, so get your ticket here.
