09/10/2024SonarMix 052: Spacer - Cosmic dance music from a galaxy not so far away

Ivet Barbero doesn’t hide that Spacer, her DJ name, is directly inspired by Charlie’s ‘Spacer Woman', the track that she used closed her debut at Sónar earlier this year.: “For me, it represents an identity that encompasses everything that fascinates me: space; the universe; and futuristic, cyberpunk aesthetics.”

SonarMix 052 is a recording of her set, and the very first set, at SonarPub on Friday Night at Sónar 2024. “That Sónar supports local artists and provides visibility for the city's talents is something very meaningful and valuable,” she says. She designed her mix to “tell a story centred on space,” working with  visual artist Fredonné to create “a narrative that tells the tale of a space woman”, a being who “travels from loneliness and misunderstanding during her cosmic odyssey,” as she seeks “freedom among the stars through the power of music, love and dance.”

Spacer never likes to stick to her comfort zone... and this set was no exception. In the opening 20 minutes alone, she moves from Leftfield’s vintage ragga energy to Trickpony’s warm grooves and Sound Virus’ sensual acid. As she says, “Every set is an opportunity to learn and create unique atmospheres that connect emotionally with people, looking beyond genres.”

It’s that connection that has always driven the Catalan to try to “communicate and reach people through music.”  And although on stage, with her mum dancing in the front row,  everything happened in “the blink of an eye”, she thinks of her debut at Sónar as “a reward for all the effort” she’s put in. “It showed me that with dedication and by staying true to yourself, dreams can come true.”
