It only takes a few seconds - before the vocals on DJ Irene's "You Wanna Suck" kick in - to realise that SonarMix 045 is coming in hot. From the first drop, the BPM counter is already at 150 bpm and it doesn’t let up. This is how TAYHANA introduces herself ahead of her travelling party Club Latinx which comes to Sónar by Night with Simona, Slim Soledad & Mare Advertencia in tow.

"I recorded this mix improvising with a lot of tracks that I've been putting together for this new European tour," she tells us. It’s an hour of music that celebrates Latin American electronic music at its most authentic. "I really like seeing that more and more artists from Latin America are finding a space in this scene," says the Argentinean artist. "It’s something that’s been happening since the 90s, it’s nothing new, it’s a continuation of that story from the underground that existed back then". (We’ll add that it’s good to see this movement getting the attention it always deserved.)

"Alejada De Los Vicios", the third track on the mix, is the only cut by TAYHANA herself. In the booth, the mind behind Club Latinx prefers to amplify the sounds of other talents from the region. "I’m mocking this vague and limited idea of Latin culture that most people have, putting to one side the sonic map of the southernmost part of South America.”

On SonarMix 045 you’ll find turn-of-the-century hard house like ‘In The House’ by Mike Flores - whose track ‘Blow Job’, recorded 20 years later, also appears - alongside rare tracks that you won’t find on google such as ‘Rumberx' by Fransia98 and ‘Calentura’ by Parzubanil. Some of these tracks, like Racing Nokia's ‘Sofa Ride’, are barely heard for a few seconds before fading away, as she condenses 24 songs into an hour. It’s a hectic cocktail that evokes what she refers to as "the collective Latin American unconscious".

Intense, powerful percussion is her trademark. "I have fun playing with the energy of Latin house and hard house,” she says. “Today, the approach is the same, whether it's baile funk, merengue or guaracha. Even with techno, the same rhythm and furious diversity is always present. I'm not very pretentious and I don't do anything new, I just like to entertain people and help them to escape from this hostile world.” Which is exactly what you’ll have the opportunity to do at Club Latinx on Friday 14th June at Sónar by Night.
