Opal Sunn began without any grand ambitions: Alex Kassian and Hiroaki OBA, both born in Japan and now based in Berlin, started out making music just for themselves, using whatever synth or drum machine was around. It was in 2016 that their work began to convince important selectors such as Ben UFO, Andrew Weatherall, DJ Sprinkles and Laurent Garnier.
When playing live, they turn experimentation into real-time creation without ever losing sight of the dancefloor: expansive chords, deep basslines and a blend of freedom and groove that wins over crowds wherever they go. Their latest 12-inch, “Elastic / Phases I – III”, released on Test Pressing, adds dub and ambient to their palette.
OBA first played Sónar in 2011; Kassian, the man behind an acclaimed version of Manuel Göttsching’s “E2-E4”, now makes his debut alongside him. Get ready for a warm, luminous set built 100% for dancing.
