Groove, science and eight decks: the Swiss-Italian duo shaking up techno from Berlin makes its Sónar debut

Some duos understand each other without even needing to make eye contact, and Funk Assault is one of them. Behind the project are Swiss-born Chlär and Italian Alarico, who met in a Berlin park after Chlär heard one of Alarico’s EPs. Two days later, they’d already produced four tracks together in the studio.

Their take on techno ranges from hard-hitting groove to distorted synths. Since 2023, they’ve been exploring the science behind dancing, from neuroscience to syncopation and bass frequencies, through their own label, Primal Instinct. In the booth, their chemistry is complete: their four-hand DJ sets run on up to eight decks and move between 150+ bpm techno, electro, 90s tribal and even ballroom, without ever letting the intensity drop.
