Sónar+D 2020: Culture finds a way.In the midst of the global pandemic, technology and creativity showed us a possible path out. So it was that Sónar+D celebrated a fully hybrid edition in September 2020, broadcasting 100+ talks, performances, dj sets and workshops live from Barcelona. A strictly limited in person audience, and an unrestricted global audience experienced talks on how technology can mitigate the damaging effects of the Anthropocene on our planet, how AR and VR can build new worlds for connection and creativity, how robots (and algorithms) help us to unleash our (very human) creativity and much more. The online program also featured a number of specially commissioned video capsules from artists from across the electronic spectrum. The capsules, ranging in length from 5 mins to 1hr, and featuring performances as varied as a live AV show from Max Cooper, an animated deep dive into the making of an AI band by Yacht or unpublished work by Ryoji Ikeda, among others, proved once again how creativity and technology can be harnessed by artists in even the harshest of circumstances.
