Sónar+D 2019: Interfacing with the futureMassive Attack’s Robert Del Naja set the tone for the 2019 edition of Sónar+D, with a keynote delving into his music, performance and activism with the groundbreaking Bristol band. On the 20th anniversary of their Mezzanine album, Del Naja spoke on how innovative use of technology has allowed them to transform both the live and recorded experience, from their use of early samplers, through to their high concept audio-visual shows with filmmaker Adam Curtis. Similarly interested in how media and technology can be repurposed to tell a new story is celebrated contemporary artist Christian Marclay, who contributed a talk at the festival and an installation at Barcelona’s Museum of Modern Art (MACBA). Zooming out, this years program showed the full picture of performance and technology, from new ways of staging, through to brand new forms of creation. Talks and installations from Marshmallow Laser Feast’s Robin McNicholas, XR innovator Timoni West and VR storytelling pioneer Jessica Brillhart showed how tech is transforming both the digital and physical AV experience. Many of these developments could be sampled across the musical program, with ‘tech-shows’ from Actress, performing with the AI Young Paint, Holly Herndon, Hamil Industries and Caterina Barbieri. From the macro, to the micro; the groundbreaking sound artist Daito Manabe also unveiled his new work created with neuroscientist Yukiyasu Kamitani, translating brain waves into music in real time. As neural interfaces grow in feasibility, the work presented an insight into how this technology can potentially be used, not just to control, but to create.
