Sónar+D 2018: Space is the place. In 2018, Sónar went to space. Literally. SonarCalling celebrated the 25th anniversary of the festival by partnering with METI and the IEEC to send specially recorded music by 38 artists close to the festival to GJ273b, a potentially habitable exoplanet 12.4 light years from Earth. This year’s Sonar+D program probed deeper into the groundbreaking and headline generating experiment, with talks from SETI experience designer Dr. Nelly Ben Hayoun, astrophysicist Yvan Dutil, Ignasi Ribas and two of the artists whose music was included, Olafur Arnalds and Zora Jones. Music’s potential to open up new worlds and spaces for discovery was also discussed by two music-tech luminaries on the programme. Legendary sound engineer Susan Rodgers expounded on her work with Prince and others, giving some insights into the possible evolution of pop music in the near future, while Roger Linn, founder of the early LinnDrum synthesizer looked back on a career spent changing the sound and nature of music for us all. Closer to home, the festival also focused heavily on experience design in the digital and physical space. This year featured the debut of Sonar360 by Media Pro, a stage dedicated to full-dome audiovisual experiences. LVMH’s chief experience officer Ian Rogers explained how culture and commerce intertwine in the 21st century marketplace, while Tarik Barri explained his use of largely analogue techniques to create the otherworldly live show for Thom Yorke. Accompanied on stage by Barri and legendary producer Nigel Godrich, The Radiohead frontman delivered one of the standout performances of the festival, no small feat in a line up that also featured highly technical audiovisual performances from Gorillaz and Richie Hawtin. A spellbinding show at Barcelona’s Grec ampitheatre from Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto brought to a close an edition that looked back at the last 25 years of creativity and technology, to dream about possible musical futures.
