Sónar+D 2017: Expanding RealitiesPerhaps no public figure has done as much to further the use of science and technology in the pursuit of art than Björk. The Icelandic artist returned to Sónar in 2017, 15 years after her last performance at the festival for a keynote talk at Sónar+D. Taking in her Biophillia project, early adoption of touch screen technology such as the Reactable - presented at Sónar in 2003 - apps, connectivity, and VR, the talk allowed a rare glimpse behind the mask of a true cultural icon. Questioning how we experience and create reality emerged as a central theme of the Sónar+D programme. With Bjork Digital, taking place simultaneously at CCCB, Sónar+D became for many in the general public the first time they were able to experience this technology, and for guest speakers and invited artists to peel back the curtain on VR and its creative applications. Similarly exploring how technology is affecting the creation and experience of art, Head of Google’s Artist and Machine Intelligence program, Kenric McDowell, showed what art could look like in the age of the algorithm, while Google Magenta researcher Douglas Eck applied similar advances to the field of music. The program also featured an installation and talk by AI art pioneer Memo Atken, whose large scale video installations revel in the creative process of GAN’s. Questioning the reality of the financial system underpinning everything, the 2017 programme also took a deep dive into the blockchain, with Peter Harris and Bas Grasmeyer exploring how this technology can change the reality of artists ownership of their work and its exploitation. From questioning reality to escaping it all together, musician artist and researcher Daito Manabe created a magical and immersive installation for the final year of SonarPlanta by Fundació Sorigue. An interactive exhibition based around light, sound, movement and robotics, Phosphere was intervened three times a day by dancers from experimental pop group ELEVENPLAY, bringing together the human and the artificial in a spellbinding fusion.
