Sónar+D 2015: Rip it up and start again.In the early 21st century, leaps in music technology rapidly changed how popular music is created, sold and enjoyed. As Moore's law reached its apparent apex, Sónar+D took a deep dive into the latest developments in production and distribution, to examine how music tech is creating a new, more democratic industry. Richard Russel, whose XL records is one of the few remaining independent success stories, talked about how being open to the underground, and open with the artists, has led to generation defining music from the likes of Adele, The XX and Radiohead. Meanwhile, Detroit legend Carl Craig discussed how the foundations of techno were based on technology, while Arthur Baker, pioneer of the 12” mix, shared how he did the same for disco and new wave. As well as a chance to learn from past disruptors, 2015 introduced us to a new breed of musical upstarts, with AV and tech shows from Arca and Jesse Kanda, Evian Christ, and Koreless & Emmanuel Biard’s jaw dropping ‘The Well’. 2015 was also a banner year for MarketLab, showcasing the latest developments from companies who have revolutionized the creative, performance and production process such as Ableton, Pioneer and Roli. The workshops program also reflected changes on the fundraising and promotion side with two foundational companies in the emergent creator economy: Kickstarter giving a masterclass in how to take a project from prototype to production, and, Vimeo showing how Video on Demand can be a path to monetisation for creators of all stripes. An audio-visual metaphor for the disruptive forces at play in the world of music and creativity could be found over at SonarPlanta, with the specially commissioned installation CMYKinetic, created by ART+COM, with a soundtrack by icelandic sound artist Olafur Arnalds.
