Sónar+ D 2014: People power! As digital culture started to take over every aspect of our lives, Sónar+D placed the focus on the systems underpinning this revolution, and the humans behind these changes. Subverting the popular idea of hacking as a destructive activity, the talks, installations and workshops showed how big data, creative programming and open source hardware could be used to make us more, not less human. The work of Japanese artist and musician Daito Manabe is implicitly tied to how technology can interface with the body. In his keynote speech he provided an overview of his career to date, with a focus on his particular take on ‘biohacking’, where sound is used to contort the body through electrodes. Elsewhere, Sónar+D 2014 saw the premiere of the concept behind Despacio, the 360º sound system by 2manyDJ’s and James Murphy that ‘hacked’ the concept of a high yield, low quality dj set by going back to basics, moving away from the idea of festival goers as units, and back towards the ideal of dancers as part of the experience. Creating a space for female artists and scientists was also front and center in the program, with a keynote from artist and designer Sputniko!, on feminism, technology and music, as well as a round table titled ‘Women Power!’, designed as a safe space for female artists to share their experiences in the industry.
