Sónar+D 2013: A template for the future. Research and development has been part of the Sónar project since its first edition in 1994, with exhibitions, installations and new technological innovations on display year after year. For its 20th anniversary, and taking advantage of a new, larger venue for Sónar by Day, Sónar dedicated an entire space to innovation with the creation of Sónar+D. At the center of this new format was MarketLab, an exhibition area for companies with a high technological, creative or educational element to show their latest innovations to the Sónar public. Deezer, Novation, Berklee College of Music and Queen Mary University London were just a few of the exhibitors in this first year. From the jump, Sónar+D encouraged collaboration and interaction, qualities exemplified in the inaugural Music Hack Day. 50 teams, selected from 300 applicants, competed live to come up with the most innovative application of technology to music. Judged by a panel of representatives from 24 companies, including SoundCloud, Facebook, Novation and Universal Music - and with full public access to the hacks in progress - the activity brought together makers, academics and businesses together, setting the template for the future of Sónar+D. Innovations in music featured heavily in this first edition, with talks from Matthew Herbert, presenting the New Radiophonic workshop, a live episode of Resident Advisor Exchange featuring a techno luminary, and a panel on how music can be a positive force for change presented by Bridges for Music and featuring Skrillex, Richie Hawtin and Luciano. Sónar+D also acts as an incubator, with Meet the Expert allowing entrepreneurs 1to1 access to industry leaders and investors, guaranteeing the future of innovation. Similarly tying into the cultural fabric of the city, Sónar+D expanded into several other venues, with David Quayola’s installation Matter at MNAC and Jacob Kierkegaard’s Labyrinths taking over the foyer at CosmoCaixa.
