Mechanical precision meets organic randomness in the Brooklyn-based digital art studio’s installation

Founded by new media artist Kamil Nawratil in 2013, Volvox Labs have earned worldwide recognition for large-format installations that combine light, sound, architecture and digital elements. From their base in Brooklyn, they’ve built up a list of clients that include Prada and Nike, Drake and Dubfire.

For Sónar+D they’re bringing their installation Astral Twin to Llotja de Mar: a large vertical LED screen that features two robotic arms locked in an eternal dance of mechanical precision and organic randomness. As they move, they “paint” aquatic visuals that resemble ink dissolved in a liquid.

This will be the sight that greets attendees as they enter the courtyard of Llotja de Mar, a statement of intent that connects with this year’s programme, where organic bodies, code, screens and machines are interchangeable and fluid.
