House, soul and funk from a London DJ raised on rare groove and soundsystem culture

Groove runs in Melvo Baptiste’s blood. Growing up in West London, his first musical education came from his ‘soul boy’ father, a former dancer with a formidable collection of 7” records that he shared with his son. Further lessons came from his uncle, Norman Jay, the legendary DJ and broadcaster who helped pave the way for the rare groove moment, first on then-pirate radio station Kiss FM and then on BBC London Radio.

Getting to sit in on his uncle’s radio sessions - and experience his era-defining sets on the Good Times double decker bus at Notting Hill Carnival - left a lasting impression on Melvo. His first love was always radio, and he brings a radio DJ’s approach to his sets: what matters most is the music he’s selecting. Rare groove classics - soul, jazz, funk - nestle alongside classic house, disco, broken beat, and plenty of contemporary cuts. Basically, if it’s got a groove, Melvo can play it.

Part of the Glitterbox family since playing their first London edition in 2016 - he’s now the brand’s Music director, as well as host of Glitterbox radio, together with Yasmin - he’ll be bringing his deep knowledge and passion for organic, funky and soulful dance music to Sónar 2026.
