Fusion and mutation are two of dance music’s only constants. Since the very beginning, producers and DJs have pushed electronic music forward by splicing genres together, adding their own personal twist to existing styles. Locked in his bedroom during the pandemic, that’s exactly what Colombian artist PETERBLUE started doing, chopping up classic hardgroove techno with latin rhythms.
What started as a project to stave off boredom and homesickness (he was living in Argentina at the time) ‘detonated’ - in his words - with an explosive remix of Bomba Estereo’s ‘Fuego’ that he uploaded to SoundCloud. Fuelled by the response, he kept experimenting, welding the loops and grooves of his favourite 90s techno with samples and hooks lifted from reggaeton, dembow and salsa (check his second EP, Diskoteka Amerika, which has been dubbed ‘technomerengue’). He’s also set up his own label PA$TI, with the aim of supporting like-minded artists from Latin America and beyond.
With each new release and session, he’s further defining the blueprint for a distinctly Latin take on techno: groovy and raw, but packed with energy and infectious melodies. We can’t wait to hear what’s he’s cooked up for his Sónar debut.
