Two of drum’n’bass and jungle’s founding fathers make their Sónar debut

Nothing says Friday at Sónar like a dose of drum’n’bass and jungle, and this year we’ve got two of the scene’s most storied artists playing together.

Raised on a diet of jazz, soul, reggae, plus 1980s hip-hop and electro, Dillinja was the perfect vessel for drum’n’bass when the genre exploded in the 1990s. A soundsystem devotee - he started making his own amps and bass bins at the age of 15 - his productions drew on his firsthand knowledge of dub sonics. A prolific producer, he’s renowned for his hard and heavy basslines - he’s a clear influence for the first wave of dubstep producers - as well as his cutting-edge studio techniques.

Doc Scott is another critical figure in the evolution of the genre. One of the first jungle DJs, he was a regular at Metalheadz’ legendary Sunday night sessions at the Blue Note in Hoxton Square. He also had the honour of being the first artist to release on Metalheadz (with label head Goldie, of course): ‘VIP Drumz’ was the A-side to ‘Ghosts Of My Life’

Joining them on stage is the leading voice from a new generation of MCs, Medic. Already a regular at Metalheadz events, the London-raised, Bristol-based mic man brings influences from grime, South London soundsystem culture and hip hop to the stage.

In short, if you’re at all interested in drum’n’bass or jungle, then don’t miss this one.
