The shape of art: TouchDesigner & the quantumness of interactive artforms

The Glad Scientist (or as it says on his passport, Daniel Sabio) operates between interactive art, performance and creative coding, exploring how technology can extend the body and the senses. Covering live performance, installation and educative work, he often uses industry standard-tool using TouchDesigner as a way to think instead of just a means of production rather than just a tool to produce.

The workshop focuses on how to develop artistic techniques in interactive art, designed for people from all backgrounds. Using ‘playful elements’ from the loose framework of quantum physics, the session starts by zooming out and asking how interactive and visual art works on a deeper level (how all the moving parts fit together), before asking: how can we create quantum lifeforms that generate new artworks, in a non-traditional manner?

But it doesn’t stop there, as things get hands-on with a session that develops and makes real these “quantum lifeforms”, followed by an introduction to using TouchDesigner as a tool for creating them. Various examples of connecting the body, hands, faces, sounds and visuals together will be shared (both during the workshop and as take home files) for participants to understand and experiment with possible systems. Finally, there’ll be a presentation of rough prototypes and sketches of the lifeforms using TouchDesigner.

The goal is for participants to leave feeling inspired, and conscious of the different ways that their diverse, existing skills can be used in the process of creating future artworks.

Participants should bring an laptop with TouchDesigner installed, plus a three-button mouse. Please note that no experience with TouchDesigner is necessary.

Workshops at Sónar+D - rules and norms

  • Each workshop has a limited capacity. All Sónar+D ticketholders can reserve their places via the SonarApp.
  • Be respectful of other participants and please only reserve workshops you are certain you will attend. If you are unable to attend a workshop, please cancel your reservation so others may attend instead. We do not encourage provisional block bookings - this is not in the spirit of Sónar+D.
  • You must arrive at Room+D 10 minutes before the start of the workshop, otherwise you will lose your place.
  • Once a workshop starts, you must stay until it ends; leaving halfway through to attend another activity is not permitted.
  • Eating or drinking inside workshops is forbidden.
  • There will be a waiting list: if a workshop you want to attend is fully booked online, please come to Room+D 10 minutes before the start and wait in line. If a spot becomes available, you’ll be allowed to enter (entrance on a first-come, first-served basis).
