The Balearic sound is famously hard to pin down - psychedelic rock, jazz funk, far-out kosmische, downtempo disco… - but if you need a primer, Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy is definitely the right DJ to give you one.
Although she’d never say it, she’s a legend on the same level as DJ Harvey, Andrew Weatherall, and of course, DJ Alfredo and José Padilla. Starting out in the late 80s in New York, where she visited David Mancuso’s famed parties at The Loft, her ‘career’ has really been a life-long quest for new music. Starting out as the first female director of legendary college radio station WNYU, she’s gone on to found global listening community and event series Classic Album Sundays, broadcast the Balearic Breakfast Show around the world, and issue countless remixes under her Cosmodelica alias.
A vinyl-obsessive, she’s a staunch defender of DJing as a vehicle for musical discovery. No ego, only eclecticism. Her debut at Sónar will be unmissable for anyone who shares her curiosity.
