<p class="p1">Without <strong>Skepta, </strong>grime would have never gone global. His 2016 breakthrough record <strong>Konnichiwa </strong>showed that grime could go toe-to-toe with American hip-hop. (Literally: it featured Pharrell Williams and A$AP Nast alongside JME, Wiley, D Double E and Novelist.) Entirely written and mainly produced by Skepta himself, it came out on <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.boybetterknow.com/"><span class="s1"><strong>Boy Better Know</strong></span></a>, the label and collective he founded with his brother JME and fellow MC Jammer. It was a calculated statement of intent: Skepta was going international, but staying true to his roots.</p><p class="p2">&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">Since then, the only way has been up. He’s gone on to collaborate with everyone from Drake and Playboi Carti to Goldie and Sammy Virji, notched two more hit albums (<strong>Ignorance is Bliss </strong>and<strong> Insomnia</strong>), become a house artist (in 2023, he and Jammer launched their <strong>Más Tiempo </strong>project), and recorded a surprise EP with Fred Again.</p><p class="p2">&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">None of this has dulled his hunger for the game: he’s still one of grime’s sharpest lyricists and one of its most underrated producers, a stadium-ready showman with a one-of-a-kind flow. With a new album - Fork &amp; Knife - set to come out in early 2026, we can’t wait to welcome him back to Sónar.</p>

The Belgian artist has never been one to rest on past glories, and playing on the biggest stages around the world has only made her music sound bigger. <p class="p1">It might feel like <strong>Chris Stussy</strong> emerged from nowhere, but in reality the Dutch DJ and producer’s ascent to the very highest echelons of house music has been a winding path.&nbsp;</p><p class="p2">&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">Although he grew up listening to jazz, trance and 90s house with his parents, he initially pursued a career as a professional footballer. At 19, he decided to focus on DJing, playing local festivals and holding down a residency at a bar in his hometown of Leiden, switching between hip-hop and house. <p class="p1">Three decades into their career, <strong>Modeselektor</strong> continue to age (dis)gracefully. Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary have never shown any desire to be predictable, and if anything, the older they get, the more far-out the duo’s music becomes. (Check the recent releases on their Monkeytown and SSPB imprints if you need reminding of their unique tastes).</p><p class="p2">&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">Since they first met at an illegal rave on the outskirts of Berlin in 1992, they’ve zigged and zagged their way through electronic music, with little regard for convention or trends. Case in point: their recent DJ-Kicks mix, which is somehow both a peak-time club set and an armchair deep-listening session, shifting from breakneck bass music to meditative dub techno and all kinds of afterhours eclecticism. After a pair of electric DJ sets at Sónar and Sónar Lisboa last year, they return in 2026 with a brand-new live set, their first in over 6 years. It’s been said many times, about many artists, but this time it’s 100% valid: expect the unexpected.</p>

<p class="p1">Even if you’ve never listened to <strong>Cabaret Voltaire</strong>, you’ve still heard them. Formed in Sheffield in 1973 by Stephen Mallinder, Richard H. Kirk and Chris Watson, the influence of ‘The Cabs’ is incalculable.&nbsp; Using tape loops, home-made oscillators and synthesisers alongside clarinet, guitar, and bass they mapped out the future of electronic and experimental music, from industrial and synth-pop to techno and acid house. Their live shows were just as explosive, Dadaist-inspired acts of provocation and all-out sonic warfare.&nbsp;</p><p class="p2">&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">To celebrate 50 years since their very first concert in 1975 - which famously ended in a riot, and with Mallinder in hospital - the surviving two members will play a handful of shows that celebrate the band’s incredible legacy and pay tribute to Kirk (who passed away in 2021). Watson left the band in 1981 to pursue a storied career in field recording -&nbsp; <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://chriswatsonreleases.bandcamp.com/album/el-tren-fantasma"><i><span class="s1">El Tren Fantasma</span></i></a>, David Attenborough BBC documentaries, the award-winning OST for <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_(soundtrack)"><span class="s1">Chernobyl</span></a>… - so this will be the first time he’s performed with Mallinder in over 40 years.</p><p class="p2">&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">Armed with a setlist of tracks from the band’s early career arc - from pivotal releases on Rough Trade and Factory through to mid-career work with legendary producer Adrian Sherwood and Chicago House legend Marshall Jefferson - the pair have reconstructed them from scratch to be played live. No mere nostalgia exercise, these shows will be the last chance to experience how far ahead of their time Cabaret Voltaire still sound.</p>

In the early 2000s the German-Iraqi artist was amongst the first to use the internet to hijack and rewire dance music culture, and that same anarchic spirit - community and culture ahead of rules and hierarchies - still inspires him today.</p><p class="p2">&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">Starting out as a hip-hop obsessed electro DJ and producer from Hamburg, Alex Ridha has gone on to collaborate with everyone from Lady Gaga and A$AP Rocky to Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) and David Lynch. He’s soundtracked films, been nominated for (and won) a Grammy, and produced for chart-topping rap stars.&nbsp;</p><p class="p2">&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">These days, he’s pouring his energy into <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://onesandzeros010101.bandcamp.com/album/boys-noize-presents-ones-and-zeros"><span class="s1">ONES and ZEROS</span></a>, an experimental concept label dedicated to the future of techno and electro. The label’s manifesto echoes what he’s been playing in his own sets: fast, intense music from across the world, with little regard for genre conventions or distinctions between ‘mainstream’ or ‘underground’. <p class="p1">One of dance music’s most playful and persuasive DJs, <strong>DJ Gigola </strong>has already established herself as a Sónar favourite in a few short years.&nbsp; Part of the multifaceted <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.livefromearth.de/"><span class="s1">Live From Earth</span></a> collective, the Berlin native is a free-spirited modern DJ - you might hear Surgeon and Madonna a few tracks apart. We think she might even have coined the term ‘genre-fluid’,&nbsp;</p><p class="p2">&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">Obsessed with rhythm and groove, but open-minded enough to free herself from that rigid codes that defined techno for so many years, she seamlessly blends high-intensity 90s cuts - trance, hardcore, techno and acid - with new school rave, club tracks, and dashes of pop music. Her experiments aren’t confined to the club either: inspired by her yoga and meditation practice, she’s released an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://livefromearthklub.bandcamp.com/album/fluid-meditations"><span class="s1">album of guided meditations</span></a> featuring ASMR vocals, field recordings and goa-style tabla drums.</p><p class="p2">&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">Her sets at Sónar and Sónar Lisboa in 2024 are already part of the Sónar canon, and we can’t wait to have her back again in 2026.</p>

<p class="p1">In early 2025, composer, vocalist and producer<strong> Julianna Barwick</strong> travelled to Paris with classically trained harpist and composer <strong>Mary Lattimore </strong>for<strong> </strong>a series of recording sessions organised by the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://philharmoniedeparis.fr/en"><span class="s1">Philharmonie de Paris</span></a> and French label <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://infine-music.com/"><span class="s1">Infiné</span></a>. Over nine days, the pair laid down what would become <i>Tragic Magic</i>, using historical harps and analog synthesisers from the Philharmonie’s instrument collection. Both had flown into Paris from Los Angeles in the immediate aftermath of the January 2025 wildfires, and the album reflects the solace they found in both their music and each other’s company in the wake of tragedy.</p><p class="p2">&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">Both artists were left awestruck by the Philharmonie’s collection, and their sense of reverie is palpable throughout the album - it’s not every day you get to play an 18th century harp or an original PROPHET-5 synthesiser - as well as something that’s harder to put into words. Cosmic wonder mixes with a sense of wearied calm, fleetingly beautiful and tinted with sadness. Witness the pair explore their musical telepathy live on stage, for a show that promises to be… magical.</p>

<p class="p1">Most producers can only dream of making one game-changing track in their career (if they’re lucky): <strong>Joy Orbison</strong> has been literally pumping them out since the start.&nbsp;</p><p class="p2">&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">In 2009, he burst onto the scene with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QZxRkPN14w"><span class="s1">Hyph Mngo</span></a>, blending dubstep’s kick-snare half time trudge with the poignant euphoria of UK hardcore. His first-ever release was an instant classic, helping catapult dubstep from midweek parties and London pirate radio to primetime airplay and dancefloors from Ibiza to Berlin.</p><p class="p2">&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">He’s repeated the same trick countless times since, spending the past 16 years crafting - massive - crossover club tracks that defy labels. <p class="p1">Two DJs with deep roots in club culture and dance music, <strong>Danielle</strong> and <strong>Ryan Elliott</strong> both prefer the spaces in between. Not house, nor techno; loose but not sloppy; not exactly classic, but not entirely modern; deep yet immediate.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p class="p2">&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">Danielle spent over a decade working at famed record shop <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.phonicarecords.com/"><span class="s1">Phonica</span></a>, before setting herself up in Bristol where she worked for similarly iconic store <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://idlehandsbristol.com/"><span class="s1">Idle Hands</span></a>. Her ties to Bristol already ran deep: local lynchpin Peverelist had been one of the first to spot her talent, tapping her to play parties for his famed <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://livitysound.bandcamp.com/"><span class="s1">Livity Sound</span></a> label. Ryan cut his teeth in Detroit before making the jump to Berlin, where he held down residencies at both Berghain and Panorama Bar, as well as legendary Offenbach venue Robert Johnson.<br>&nbsp;</p><p class="p1">Versatility comes baked in with that kind of experience, so when they come to Sónar 2026, expect a free-flowing, understated session that will prove that good dance music never goes out of style.</p>
