Barcelona-based creative studio Playmodes have collaborated with Francesc Rey, an engineer at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC)’s telecommunications department for a unique and timely project, ‘Astres’. Known for their spectacular light installations and ingenious engineering, Eloi Maduell and Santi Vilanova asked themselves if it would be possible to create ‘ecological’ work powered by natural - specifically sun and star - light. At Sónar+D they’ll present two projects: one ‘By Day’ that seeks to grow a plant within a basement using reflected sunlight; and a second ‘By Night’ which uses starlight to power a precision laser to create a night-time installation.
