A pioneer of queer hip-hop
For over a decade, New Jersey rapper Rashard Bradshaw has brought a much-needed dose of queerness to hip-hop. As Cakes Da Killa, his lyrics - delivered with a rapid-fire flow that nods to classic 90s NYC rap - offer a twist on traditional rap material. He might cover rivalries, partying, and sex, but it’s all from the perspective of an openly gay black man. Never shy about his love for the dancefloor, his 2022 album ‘Svengali’ deepens his relationship with club music, featuring ballroom house, Jersey club, and a touch of furious jazz. Expect a powerful performance - part band leader, part throwback rap act, part queer icon - at Sónar by Night this year.
