“It’s a kind of moodboard,” says
Selectya Glossy of
SonarMix 012. For the first episode of a new season of the series, the Barcelona-based artist assembled her favourite moments from recent sets, and then set about recreating them: a sort of megamix, or a DJ highlight reel.
The result is what her appearance at
Sónar by Day 2023 might resemble, “A journey that connects the most danceable rhythms of the global south like
reggaeton,
dancehall,
amapiano,
gqom, and
kuduro with
more experimental sounds from
electronic music.”
The south-to-south connections of the opening 5 minutes alone set the tone. A Blade Runner sample hovers briefly over Peruvian artist
QOQEQA’s shimmering Andean pyschedelia, which gets spliced with gruff dancehall from
Munga Honorable, before
DJ Adi & DJ Picante’s ‘Cavalo Maluco’ gets mashed into airy reggaeton by
Plan B feat. Yailemm & Clandestino. It’s physical dance music that makes no distinction between mind and body, from scenes and genres that remain on the margins of most European dancefloors. “Inhabiting the periphery is something that I identify with because that's where I come from” she adds, “Recognising the beauty that grows in the margins is something I’ve learnt over time.”
For Selectya Glossy,
Sónar is often where she’s found that beauty. When she takes to the stage at
SonarVillage by Estrella Damm on Friday 16th June, she’ll be thinking of watching amapiano superstar K
amo Mphela there last year. “She included in her live show a track by
Griffit Vigo, ‘Ree’s Vive’, which is probably my favourite gqom track by one of my favourite producers, it was a really cathartic moment for me. In the mix you'll find an unreleased track of his,” she lets slip. It’s one of a few unreleased exclusives dotted throughout, alongside an even darker slice of gqom from
Menzi, and a bouncing amapiano riddim from
Citykingrsa ft
Drummertee924.
Aside from her own set at Sónar 2023, she recommends
Manuka Honey and
Nick León, two DJs who explore latinx club styles, as well as
Merca Bae’s ‘2048’ live show. Beyond that, it’s about discovery. “Sónar is where you go to enjoy what you know but also to experience other sounds that you are not used to.” As her SonarMix shows, that spirit is an essential part of her artistry.
