Tradition meets modernity
The junction between tradition and modernity has become a fertile ground for musical experimentation in recent years, and there are few who represent that more clearly than Barcelona vocal and electronic duo Tarta Relena. Marta Torrella and Helena Ros’ started out messing around with their voices as teenagers, drawing on their choral education to put together a capella versions of their favourite songs. They found themselves on stage at El Pumarejo, Barcelona’s foremost community-run DIY venue, and one thing just seemed to lead to another. Their new album, Fiat Lux, is a fresh, youthful look at old ideas. The pair take traditional polyphonic vocal songs (in Catalan, ancient Greek, Occitan, Spanish and more…) and dress them up in modernity, with subtle touches of electronics and their own interpretations. They half-jokingly call the results ‘progressive Gregorian’, music which is beautiful and stirring, yet also brushed with a certain humour and charm. Without a doubt of the most unique live acts on the Sónar 2022 lineup.
