Pan-African club music
A founding member of Barcelona’s Jokkoo collective, Maguette Dieng is clearly enamoured with the possibilities that the new wave of pan-African club music provides. Jookloo have made a name in Barcelona with parties that explore a radically different vision of African music, one that’s gritty and dense, without sacrificing a drop of energy. As MBODJ, Dieng is especially unafraid to explore harder and more aggressive sounds taken from across the spectrum, laced with percussion and unfamiliar textures. There’s a sense of finding joy within the darkness, but also of a slowly simmering, yet carefully controlled rage, which tallies with how she describes her own productions as more “melodic, more apocalyptic than warlike.”
She'll be joined by Akyute - Barcelona artists Natalia Gima and Magdalena Hart - who've developed visuals especially for her show.
