Kabza De Small x DJ Maphorisa (Scorpion Kings) 6h set
Saturday 18 00:00 - 06:00
Sónar by Night
Amapiano all-night long
The biggest names that you might never have heard of on the Sónar 2022 lineup. South African producers DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small are two of the godfathers of amapiano, the latest subgenre of house to emerge from the townships. The deep, loose and soulful sound of amapiano (‘the pianos’ in Zulu), which emerged in part as a response to the darker and more aggressive sound of gqom, caught the attention of the global underground in 2021. But it’s been a mainstream success story in South Africa for a few years now: an aspirational soundtrack for South Africa’s buzzing club scene. Maphorisa has been writing hits for nearly a decade, from kwaito through to gqom and now topping the charts with amapiano, while Kabza De Small (5 years his junior) is a relative newcomer. In 2019, they collaborated for the first time, releasing ‘Scorpion Kings’ an album of buoyant bass, low-slung grooves and evocative Zulu vocals that they co-produced together. Since then, they’ve become bonafide stars in their own country with a host of releases (including an album with Congolese vocalist TRESOR) under their belt. On Saturday at Sónar by Night, they’ll stretch the languid, bass-driven grooves of their signature sound across 6 hours in the SonarCar. You might just end up staying there all night.
