When Lil’ Uzi adlibs ‘The greatest to ever do it’, it’s tempting to put it down to rapstar braggadocio. But then again, the North Philly trap star could have a point. When it comes to statistics, Uzi’s enviable scorecard, (including the 310 million plays of XO Tour Lif3), put him in a league apart, and that’s without factoring in the sheer bumpability of his output over the past few years. Since crossing over into the mainstream with his verse on Migo’s ubiquitous Bad and Bougie, Uzi has been inescapable, cropping up alongside MVP’s and superstar rappers alike including A$AP Rocky, Kanye West, Travis Scott, Playboi Carti and Young Thug. With a follow up to Luv is Rage 2 due for later this year, 2019 is the year where Uzi moves definitively from co-sign to headline act.
Born Symere Woods in North Philadelphia, Lil Uzi cites Marylin Manson and Kanye’s 808 and Heartbreak as his two main influences. And it shows, both in his ability to craft a compelling stage personality, and his penchant for beats that take creative risks, veering away from the trap playbook to embrace wonky electronics, arpeggiated samples and that cross the boundaries of genre with aplomb. These beats make the perfect backdrop for his heartfelt, engaging and authentic rhymes, as well as his adlibs elevated to an artform. His performance at Sónar 2019 is cause for double celebration, as it will also be his first show in Spain, and one of a handful of festival dates over the summer.
