Sónar by Day - SonarHall
The vocalist, programmer and musician Holly Herndon brings her new show PROTO to Sónar Barcelona.
Created through collaborations with a long list of musicians, programmers, developers and theorists - including JLin, long time collaborator Mat Dryhurst and the AI baby christened 'Spawn' - the show, and it's eponymous LP, is an exploration of the 'protocol era': in a sense how we all, machine and human alike, are defined by our programming. The show, which takes place at SonarHall on Fri 19th July, will further explore questions of 'who we are, what we are and what we are heading towards'.
Since releasing “Movement” a decade ago, Herndon has consistently pushed at the boundaries of music creation, in the process further erasing the line between programmer and musician. Concerned intimately with the internet and the networked individual, her 2015 LP Platform is considered a watershed moment in the scene. As we approach the end of the decade, Holly continues to explore the nature of our reality as humans through technology like no other being.
