If HAAi’s ascent to the top of her field in 2019 seems precipitous, that’s because you’ve never been present at one of her dextrous DJ sets. Her skills in the booth helped her beat off competition from the likes of Four Tet, Ricardo Villalobos and Avalon Emerson, to win the BBC R1 essential mix of the year. And all it takes is one listen to the mix from start to finish to understand why.
For the last few years this Australian DJ with roots in the shoegaze and psychedelic rock scene has been perfecting her art as a resident at London’s Phonox club, building a devoted following for her sets that sideline predictable bangers in favour of hypnotic beats and narrative journeys with an intense emotional punch. Drawn to the psychedelic, cosmic side of house and techno, she’s not immune to the charms of tribal percussions, cosmic disco or gritty acid breakdowns. Adding another string to her bow, HAAi recently released her debut EP: Motorik Voodoo Bush Doof - whose title is as good a description of her style as anything we could write here.
