Innervisions / DE
The holy grail of the dance music artist - that you can enjoy success without compromising, do what you want, when you want, and without relentless promotion - is somewhat elusive. Not so for the German DJ Dixon, who has accomplished just that: Worldwide recognition, near universal acclaim and total freedom when it comes to artistic decision making. Thanks to his uncommon talent as a DJ, and his legions of adoring fans, he's managed all this without having released much of his own music as a producer. Who better then to close Saturday at Sónar by Night than the DJ that topped Resident Advisor's readers' poll four years in a row?
Despite being at the top of his movement, Steffen Berkhahn, the man behind the Dixon moniker seems untroubled by trends and fashions within club music, these days only playing where and when he chooses. Having put the work in with residencies at E-Werk or Tresor, turning in classic remixes for the likes of Jazzanova or enjoying success with Where We At, Dixon is free to focus on his Innervisions imprint - that he runs with fellow DJ Ame - and only playing a handful of carefully selected gigs a year. All of which makes his upcoming Sónar 2019 show even more exciting.
