Sónar by Night - Capella MACBA
Sónar+D will co-stage Christian Marclay's most recent work "Investigations" (2018), on 19th July at MACBA's La Capella.
'Investigations' shows Marclay's joint interest in photography and subversive use of classical instruments. The score consists of 100 images, both found and cut-up, of hands playing the piano. Intended for 10 pianists, each musician is tasked with playing as close as possible to the sound shown at the moment of the photograph, transcribing into musical notation the sound of the image. The ambiguity of the undertaking gives the piece its name: Investigations. According to the 10 pianists who will play the piece on the 19th, 4 of them have so far been confirmed - Carles Viarnès, Haize Lizarazu, Phillippe Thomas and Steve Beresford.
Christian Marclay is one of the most unique and renowned artists of the last 40 years. Over this time, he has assembled a profoundly original artistic universe taking in sound art, video, photography, noise and cinema. One of the first sound artists to comprehend the potential of the record player as an instrument, his experiments with pre-dating hip hop and turntablism by a handful of years. Born in California, raised in Geneva and a long term resident of New York City, Marclay is a cult figure, adored by musicians, composers and all lovers of non-traditional musics, and a past and current source of inspiration for those who are working with punk, hip-hop, free jazz, film soundtracks, contemporary classical and more.
