The Constellations of Sónar by Night 3. Dancefloor selectors

23/05/2018

So full of stars are the nights at Sónar, that several of the acts can be grouped into constellations; each one representing a distinct sonic universe.

Today's article takes in the third of these: lords of the dancefloor across all electronic genres.

A cosmic trip

This year two experienced pilots take the controls at SonarCar; each highly respected on the international scene, and - when it comes to the strength of their musical knowledge and selections - each exerting a significant gravitational pull.

On one hand we have DJ Harvey, a truly legendary force behind the decks who's sets, while astonishingly diverse, gravitate naturally towards cosmic disco, balearic house and psychedelic electronica. Similarly, wide ranging but lazer-focused when it comes to building a narrative is John Talabot. Although the younger of the two, in recent years he's built a name for himself thanks to his affinity for long form sets that start in one place and end up in another seemingly seamlessly.

Masters of the (dance) Universe

Sónar by Night also welcomes two artists who have been at the forefront of dance music for decades, and who have mastered the art of keeping large crowds moving till way past dawn. Laurent Garnier will do just that with a now legendary Sónar slot - closing the SonarPub stage on Saturday night with a four-hour set. The endlessly talented A-Trak will also be flexing his considerable dance music muscles the previous night at SonarClub.

Also in this category are Northern Irelands' Bicep, now a modern classic thanks to their consistently high quality releases and unfailing ear for timeless house, techno and UK garage. While no strangers to Sónar either, this will be the first time they perform live at the festival, with a show that promises to be just as enjoyable as their sets.

Stellar Duets

This year’s Sónar line up is absolutely filled with artistic pairings and creative couplings, and the night time events are no exception with two duets in particular: Miss Kittin & Kim Ann Foxman and Motor City Drum Ensemble & Jeremy Underground. Where the first of these will over a set that showcases their shared passion for dark edged house, techno and electro, the second will open their treasure chest of forgotten disco and house cuts. While they couldn't be more different in sound, both these pairings are guaranteed to keep you dancing.

Parallel Dimensions

As well as the lode stars described above, Sónar by Night also welcomes selectors from left of field, who are helping to trace new galaxies of sound when it comes to club music.

These include Young Marco, the endlessly creative analogue house producer and DJ Octo Octa and the new stars of the Spanish scene - Bawrut (Freestyle and acid), Alicia Carrera (psychedelic electro and darkwave) and the DJ alter ego of the minds behind the Lapsus radio program, label and festival C.E.E. Shepherds.
