For the third year in a row, We Are Europe, an initiative joining 8 festivals from across the European continent presents a diverse and exciting program at Sónar Barcelona. This year's invited festivals are Nuits Sonores, Insomnia, and Resonate.
Starting where else but on the dancefloor, the Lyon festival Nuits Sonores kicks things off on Thursday 14th June with two acts guaranteed to get SonarVillage by Estrella Damm dancing. Hailing from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kokoko! mix DIY electronic instruments with processed beats resulting in a heady brew of polyrhythms and otherworldly sounds that's not to be missed. They'll be followed by another artist who is no stranger to global beats; Lyon resident and Bad Gyal producer King Doudou, whose sets run the gauntlet from latin trap to baile funk and back again. Also be on the look out for special guests during his performance.
Musically and geographically removed from the shows by Nuits Sonores - but no less engaging - are the artists presented by Norwegian festival Insomnia. As befitting a festival based on the cusp of the Arctic circle, the curated artists bring a wintry and enchanting aesthetic to SonarComplex. The first of these will be an exclusive duo formed by experienced noise artist Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje and saami folk singer Katarina Barruk. The result - Ratkje & Barruk: Avant Joik is inspired directly by the arctic landscape and folk traditions, and promises to be a haunting treat. Secondly, Jenny Hval, a total artist un-afraid to tackle controversial issues while at the same time crafting impeccable pop-music, will make her long awaited debut at the festival.
For its part, Resonate will present the incredible new audiovisual show by Daedelus in SonarHall, called Panoptes, and marked by an advanced technology applied to the staging.
In addition We Are Europe will be present at Sónar+D. Nuits Sonores will be presenting the talk The New Internet featuring data expert Mat Dryhurst, info-activist Alistair Alexander and internet and music pioneer Ian Rogers. Insomnia will present a special panel 'Emergency Button', addressing how technology can help immigration. Meanwhile, representatives will be adding their experience to Meet the Expert, and you can discover more about the We Are Europe Initiative at their booth in MarketLab.
