Sónar by Day - SonarVillage by Estrella Damm
Thobani "Que" Mgobhozi and Zipho "Goldmax" Mthembu live in a rented duplex in Manor Gardens, a small hidden suburb in Durban from which they have built their following, which has now spread beyond the city limits and across the country and continent. In recent interviews, the duo has declared that fame is an experience that they will handle as best they can and that they will continue to do what they enjoy. And what they do is Gqom, a Durban sound that can be defined as a kind of hybrid between house and kwaito that has made the leap from local phenomenon to the auricles (and limbs) of the European and American public.
Distruction Boyz are already -together with Naked Boys, The Rudeboyz, DJ Lag and Babes Wodumo- established artists in the Gqom genre and one of Diplo's picks, hence our opportunity to see them perform live at SónarVillage, participating in a showcase that promises to deliver the most exciting music brewing on the African continent right now. The twenty-something duo released their debut album in October 2017, whose title gave us a clue as to what is to come: "Gqom is the Future". And so it was: a month and a half after its release it became the first LP of this genre to achieve gold record status.
