Still Rising

With a career spanning more than 30 years De La Soul continue to release albums and perform live shows of quality and originality that remain the envy of many of today’s younger outfits. They'll be performing their most recent album “De La Soul and The Anonymous Nobody” at Sónar 2017. The Long Island trio first visited the festival in 2005 confirming the hype for all present: An extraordinary group capable of travelling far beyond the classic structures of hip hop, transforming all the virtues of their excellent records into magical live shows. Their new album was financed in a matter of hours through a Kickstarter campaign and features a star studied list of collaborators including Jill Scott, Snoop Dogg, David Byrne and Damon Albarn, and covers a range of genres (rock, funk, rap, soul), all presented with their customary intelligence and sense of humour.

De La Soul are without a doubt one of the most important groups in American hip hop. Active members of the Native Tongues collective in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and inventors of the Daisy Age movement, their debut album “3 Feet High And Rising” (1989) is unanimously regarded as a masterpiece of the genre and a foundation album in a hip hop style committed to positive values in contradiction to the aggressive nature of gangsta rap. The richness and exuberance of their sound is indelibly marked by the charisma and wisdom of their three founding members, Dave Jolicoeur (Trugoy), Kelvin Mercer (Posdnuos) and Vincent Mason (Maseo), all of whom are enlightened and knowledgeable ambassadors for the Afro-American sound and supreme masters in the use of the sampler and rhyme. These living legends are on top form and continue to push the boundaries of open-minded and conscientious hip hop, the genre, which they helped to found.
