Creativity and daring

Of all the vocalists operating in the contemporary R&B space, Dawn Richard (or DΔWN, with a triangle replacing the “a”) is undoubtedly the most unorthodox and audacious. With a career seemingly destined for the mainstream, she decided to change direction, becoming one of the most innovative figures in popular music to have emerged in recent years. Her transformation was most noticeable on “Blackheart” (2015), chosen by the prestigious online magazine FACT as the best album of the year, and the second chapter in trilogy that was completed by the equally spectacular “Redemption”, released just a few months ago on electronic music label Local Action. This year she will make her Sónar debut at SonarVillage on the festival’s first day, which promises to be one of the most powerful performances of the entire festival.

Richard was raised in New Orleans and has lived a very unusual life for an artist who has achieved such success. Supported by Sean Combs (aka P. Diddy) as part of the Danity Kane group, with Machinedrum producing her latest album, she has also released an EP on Fade To Mind, the label that's also home to Nguzunguzu and Future Brown.  Dawn has relinquished the comfort of a typical ‘music industry’ career in exchange for implementing her own creative stream (she does everything: sings, produces, directs and designs her live shows), which has allowed her to voluntarily depart from commercial restrictions, reaching a new audience who have welcomed her with open arms.
