Pushing hip hop boundaries
You could call what JJ Doom do hip hop, but that would only be half of the story really. Composed of 2003 Academy grad Jneiro Jarel and DOOM, the project is a playground for both artists to stretch out and get a bit... English. Their debut album, released in 2012, featured the likes of Damon Albarn and Beth Gibbons, two of the UK’s finest – and that’s generally where DOOM focuses his lyrical sights for the project (track titles include “Guv’nor” and “Rhyming Slang”). Don’t get it twisted, though: DOOM still wants to snatch dough and is quick to encourage personal hygiene too. And Jarel is in fine form as well, providing the sort of hefty backing that you might be hard-pressed to have heard in his previous work. Onwards and upwards the apples and pears to fame? Only lager and lime will tell.
